Design Miami/ is expanding beyond its flagship fairs in Miami and Basel to launch a new partnership in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
The Gulf region’s first Design Miami/ Podium exhibition, announced this week during Design Miami/Basel, is scheduled to take place next spring in the Doha Design District as part of a three-year partnership with Msheireb Properties, a real estate subsidiary of the state-backed Qatar Foundation, which is developing the district.
The collaboration seeks to “define Doha as a new global design hub”, Design Miami said in a statement. The fair’s chief executive Jennifer Roberts commented: “As Design Miami continues to grow globally, we welcome this partnership with Msheireb Properties and look forward to bringing our vision to Doha. Qatar’s capital has grown immensely and is an emerging destination for art and design.”
The Doha partnership is part of the fair’s Podium programme of pop-up selling exhibitions bringing together collectible design from galleries and independent design studios. The inaugural event launched last December in Miami, and in June, the fair announced plans for a second Podium show in Shanghai on 5-14 November, coinciding with Shanghai Art Week.
